Viagra is a prescription drug that is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps to achieve and maintain an erection. Sildenafil belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
Viagra is taken by mouth, usually in the morning, about one hour before sexual activity.
Viagra works by blocking the action of a natural substance called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). This enzyme works by stopping the growth of a chemical called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which helps to relax the smooth muscle in the penis.
In response to sexual stimulation, the blood vessels in the penis dilate, resulting in an erection.
Viagra inhibits the action of PDE5, which means it increases the amount of cGMP. This increases the amount of blood flowing to the penis.
